Elisava Masters' Talks | Surveillance art, dying phones, and fake likes

Lectures, talks

On Wednesday, November 12, the DHub will host an inspiring talk by Dries Depoorter, a creative technologist and internationally acclaimed artist known for works that blur the boundaries between technology, surveillance, and creativity.
This will be a unique opportunity to discover the work of an artist who has turned digital culture into a source of critical and humorous reflection.

Through a journey across his most recent and upcoming projects, Depoorter will share with the audience the conceptual and technical processes behind his work, while offering live demonstrations of some of his pieces — including gifts of “likes” or new followers.

Dries Depoorter is a Belgian artist and technologist based in Ghent who explores the relationship between technology, surveillance, artificial intelligence, and social media with a playful and ironic tone. Among his best-known works are Die With Me, an app that only works when a phone’s battery drops below 5%; The Follower, which combines open cameras and AI to reveal what lies behind Instagram images; and The Flemish Scrollers, which automatically identifies politicians using their phones during parliamentary sessions. Depoorter has exhibited at institutions such as Barbican (London), Art Basel, Bozar, and Ars Electronica, and is regarded as one of the most innovative voices at the intersection of art, technology, and digital culture.

This talk is part of the fourth edition of Elisava Masters’ Talks, a lecture series that explores the contemporary design landscape through the professional experiences of leading figures in design, communication, architecture, art, and innovation.
