Scale models, prototypes, first editions, reissues... Designers use several different terms to talk about the production of objects.
Scale models are used to define the volumes, shapes and colours chosen; prototypes are models used to produce the final item; one-offs are pieces made only once; first editions are the first pieces produced from a design; and reissues are pieces made again, often with changes or adjustments that update or improve them.
Using pieces identical to the ones in the Collection on display this exhibition, this selection offers a hands-on opportunity to try out different ways of sitting. For preservation reasons, touching and sitting on items is usually forbidden in museums, but you’re invited to do just that with these pieces as you explore all their different possibilities.
This is your chance to test out furniture identical to the heritage pieces and to determine whether what you see and feel accurately reflects what you are told about them.
