Retaining water

Once water was obtained, it had to be kept carefully. The use of large recipients helped ensure it was available throughout the day for different household tasks. Before the generalisation of running water, recipients such as  earthenware jugs and jars, common in courtyards, were essential for managing this highly prized resource efficiently.
